Begun in 2014 and finished in 2017, FILM NOIR is a project proving: the figure of the extra, the “supernumerary” or background performer.

La Ribot exposes their movements as much as the context in which they perform. Interested since the 1990s in what the extras she invited on stage could bring to dance, La Ribot reveals here the choreographic dimension in cinema. Observing the actions of the extras, the context in which they appear, the treatment of space and above all their attitude and involvement, La Ribot reveals a world that exists only in the margins.

The extras have been an integral part of her theatrical discourse: 12 Toneladas de plumas, 1991, El Gran Game, 1999, PARAdistinguidas, 2011, and especially 40 Espontáneos, 2004, in which the extras were the only protagonists. She continued her research with extras in major film productions with Another Hors Champ, Pièce distinguée Nº43, a short film made for PARAdistinguidas in 2011.

FILM NOIR takes a close look at the extras in Spartacus, 1960, and El Cid, 1961 – human “litmus paper” whose actions and attitudes reveal the two productions’ contrasting ideologies in 1960’s Franco’s Spain. Through these anonymous bodies, the film evokes the political and social movements of the time. In the rest of the film, the bodies of the extras are bodies at work, and we contemplate the splendour of their acting. Finally, these bodies transform the space, choreographing a sensual ballet that is sometimes funny or catastrophic, but always impeccable.
