The video Cuarto de oro, 2008, continues la Ribot’s exploration of dance filmed from the point of view of the body dancing. It consists of a three and a half minute-long, hand-held sequence of video presented without edits and it features the flamenco dancer, choreographer and actress Cristina Hoyos, star of Blood Wedding, Carmen and El amor brujo, Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura’s 1980s trilogy of filmed dance dramas.

Cuarto de oro was commissioned by Paco del Río and Javier Codesal for screening as part of in_ter_va_lo_dos, a programme of the Ciclo de arte contemporáneo y flamenco, Obra Social Cajasol, in Seville. La Ribot and Hoyos “grew” the work collaboratively, shooting, reviewing the footage and shooting again, and the finished piece is the result of nineteen individual experiments. At one level the work forms a fleeting portrait of Hoyos, graceful, dignified and full of vitality in her early sixties. It mixes a feeling of lively activity and references to her flamenco repertoire, with a sense of repose and reminiscence.

Cuarto de oro is a close relative of the 2003 work Travelling: in both pieces location plays a key role. The “golden room” in which Hoyos performs is the living room in her own house and as she dances with, and to, the camera we catch glimpses of books, personal papers and family photographs. La Ribot notes that the interior also triggered memories of her own: its subtle shades of cream, white and gold reminded her of the interiors of Seville and Andalusia and of childhood journeys to the south with her Andalusian father.
